우리 존재의 의미

성경은 우리의 존재가 우연이 아닌 하나님의 계획에 의한 것임을 분명히 말씀하고 있습니다. 시편 139:16에서는 이렇게 말합니다: “내 형질이 이루어지기 전에 주의 눈이 보셨으며 나를 위하여 정한 날이 하나도 되기 전에 주의 책에 다 기록이 되었나이다”

이 말씀은 우리 각자의 삶이 하나님의 특별한 계획 안에 있음을 보여줍니다. 그렇다면 우리는 왜 이 땅에 보내졌을까요?

하나님의 목적

성경이 묘사하는 하나님은 무심하게 우리를 이 세상에 던져놓는 분이 아닙니다. 오히려, 그분은 각자에게 특별한 목적을 가지고 우리를 창조하셨습니다. 에베소서 2:10은 이를 명확히 말씀합니다: “우리는 그가 만드신 바라 그리스도 예수 안에서 선한 일을 위하여 지으심을 받은 자니 이 일은 하나님이 전에 예비하사 우리로 그 가운데서 행하게 하려 하심이니라”

이는 곧 하나님께서 그 목적을 위해 우리에게 필요한 것들을 함께 주셨다는 것을 의미합니다:

1. 우리 안에 심어주신 고유한 재능
2. 성령님을 통해 주시는 특별한 은사

재능과 은사의 의미

하나님께서 우리에게 특정한 재능과 은사를 주셨다는 사실은 매우 중요한 의미를 지닙니다. 이는 우리가 이 땅에서 그분의 뜻을 이루기 위한 도구라는 것을 나타냅니다. 마치 예수님께서 달란트 비유(마태복음 25:14-30)를 통해 가르치신 것처럼, 우리는 주어진 재능을 활용하고 발전시켜야 할 책임이 있습니다.

우리의 책임

이러한 이해를 바탕으로, 우리에게는 몇 가지 중요한 책임이 있습니다:

1. 하나님의 뜻을 구하기: 우리 삶의 진정한 목적을 알기 위해서는 우리를 창조하신 하나님께 물어야 합니다. 잠언 3:5-6은 이렇게 말씀합니다: “너는 마음을 다하여 여호와를 신뢰하고 네 명철을 의지하지 말라 너는 범사에 그를 인정하라 그리하면 네 길을 지도하시리라”
2. 재능과 은사 발견하기: 우리 안에 숨겨진 재능과 은사를 찾고 개발하는 것은 매우 중요합니다. 베드로전서 4:10은 “각각 은사를 받은 대로 하나님의 여러 가지 은혜를 맡은 선한 청지기 같이 서로 봉사하라”고 말씀합니다.
3. 선한 목적으로 사용하기: 선하신 하나님께서는 우리를 악한 목적으로 보내지 않으셨습니다. 따라서 우리의 재능과 은사는 반드시 선한 목적으로 사용되어야 합니다.

소명을 찾는 여정: 개인적 경험

제 개인적인 경험을 나누고 싶습니다. 대학 시절 처음 하나님을 만났을 때, 저는 선교단체에서 맡은 직분을 어떻게 잘 감당할 수 있을지 고민하며 노력했습니다. 매년 “앞으로 나는 무엇을 하며 살아가야 할까? 나의 소명은 무엇일까?”라는 질문을 하며 기도했지만, 매년 들려온 응답은 “요셉처럼 현실에 최선을 다하며 묵묵히 기다리면 하나님께서 길을 보여주실 것이다”였습니다.

대학 졸업 후, ‘성서한국을 꿈꾼다'(이승장 저)라는 책을 읽던 중 ‘문서선교’라는 단어가 제 눈앞에 툭 튀어나오는 것을 느꼈습니다. 그 순간 “이것이 하나님께서 주신 소명이구나!”라고 깨달았습니다. 돌이켜보니 대학 시절 선교단체에서 제가 맡았던 직분들은 ‘소식지를 위한 기자, 자료부, 문서부’였다는 사실을 그제서야 깨달았습니다. 이를 통해 하나님께서 저를 훈련시키며 준비하신 소명임을 확신하게 되었습니다.

소명을 찾는 과정의 도전과 극복

소명을 찾고 실천하는 과정은 결코 쉽지 않습니다. 때로는 불확실성, 두려움, 의심이 우리를 괴롭힐 수 있습니다. 그러나 이러한 도전들은 우리의 믿음을 더욱 강하게 만들고 하나님께 더 가까이 가게 하는 기회가 될 수 있습니다.

1. 인내와 기다림: 제 경험에서 보셨듯이, 소명을 발견하는 데에는 시간이 걸릴 수 있습니다. 이 과정에서 인내가 필요합니다. 야고보서 1:4는 “인내를 온전히 이루라 이는 너희로 온전하고 구비하여 조금도 부족함이 없게 하려 함이라”고 말씀합니다.
2. 현재에 충실하기: 미래의 소명만을 기다리며 현재를 소홀히 하지 마세요. 골로새서 3:23은 “무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라”고 가르칩니다.
3. 지속적인 기도와 말씀 묵상: 하나님의 뜻을 분별하는 가장 좋은 방법은 기도와 말씀 묵상입니다. 로마서 12:2는 “너희는 이 세대를 본받지 말고 오직 마음을 새롭게 함으로 변화를 받아 하나님의 선하시고 기뻐하시고 온전하신 뜻이 무엇인지 분별하도록 하라”고 말씀합니다.

정결한 그릇으로 살아가기

우리가 명심해야 할 중요한 점은 이 세상에는 다양한 종류의 ‘그릇’이 필요하다는 것입니다. 우리의 성공 여부는 우리가 어떤 종류의 그릇인지에 달려 있지 않습니다. 오히려 우리가 얼마나 정결하게 자신을 가꾸고, 하나님께서 사용하실 수 있도록 준비되어 있는지가 중요합니다.

하나님은 금그릇에게는 금그릇의 용도를, 질그릇에게는 질그릇의 용도를 요구하십니다. 우리가 어떤 그릇이든, 하나님께서 정하신 용도로 충실히 쓰임 받는다면 그것으로 충분합니다. 우리는 각자의 자리에서 최선을 다해 하나님을 섬기며, 그분의 뜻을 이루는 도구가 되어야 합니다.

결론

우리의 삶에서 가장 중요한 것은 큰 업적을 남기는 것이 아닙니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 재능과 은사를 올바르게 사용하며, 그분의 뜻에 따라 살아가는 것이 진정한 성공입니다. 우리 모두가 하나님 앞에서 정결한 그릇으로 살아가며, 각자의 소명을 충실히 이행할 수 있기를 소망합니다.

God-given Talents and Calling: Living as a Pure Vessel

We often ponder deeply about the reason for our existence. “Why am I here?”, “What is the purpose of my life?” These questions are as old as human history itself. Today, we will reflect on these questions from a biblical perspective.

The Meaning of Our Existence

The Bible clearly states that our existence is not a coincidence but part of God’s plan. Psalm 139:16 says: “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.”

This verse shows that each of our lives is within God’s special plan. So why were we sent to this earth?

God’s Purpose

The God described in the Bible is not one who carelessly throws us into this world. Rather, He created each of us with a special purpose. Ephesians 2:10 clearly states: “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

This means that God has given us what we need for that purpose:

1. Unique talents instilled within us
2. Special gifts given through the Holy Spirit

The Meaning of Talents and Gifts

The fact that God has given us specific talents and gifts has a very important meaning. It indicates that we are instruments to fulfill His will on this earth. Just as Jesus taught through the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30), we have the responsibility to utilize and develop the talents given to us.

Our Responsibilities

Based on this understanding, we have several important responsibilities:

1. Seeking God’s Will: To know the true purpose of our lives, we must ask God who created us. Proverbs 3:5-6 says: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
2. Discovering Talents and Gifts: It’s very important to find and develop the hidden talents and gifts within us. 1 Peter 4:10 says: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
3. Using for Good Purposes: The good God did not send us for evil purposes. Therefore, our talents and gifts must be used for good purposes.

The Journey of Finding One’s Calling: Personal Experience

I’d like to share my personal experience. When I first encountered God during my college years, I pondered and strived to fulfill the roles given to me in a missionary organization. Every year, I prayed asking, “What should I do with my life in the future? What is my calling?” But the answer I heard every year was, “Like Joseph, if you do your best in your current reality and wait patiently, God will show you the way.”

After graduating from college, while reading a book titled “Dreaming of a Bible Korea” (by Seung-jang Lee), the word ‘document mission’ seemed to jump out at me. At that moment, I realized, “This is the calling God has given me!” Looking back, I then realized that the roles I had in the missionary organization during college were ‘reporter for newsletters, documentation department, and literature department’. Through this, I became convinced that this was indeed my calling that God had been training and preparing me for.

Challenges and Overcoming in the Process of Finding One’s Calling

The process of finding and practicing one’s calling is never easy. Sometimes, uncertainty, fear, and doubt can trouble us. However, these challenges can be opportunities to strengthen our faith and draw us closer to God.

1. Patience and Waiting: As you saw in my experience, it can take time to discover one’s calling. Patience is needed in this process. James 1:4 says: “Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”
2. Being Faithful to the Present: Don’t neglect the present while only waiting for your future calling. Colossians 3:23 teaches: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
3. Continuous Prayer and Meditation on the Word: The best way to discern God’s will is through prayer and meditation on His Word. Romans 12:2 says: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Living as a Pure Vessel

An important point to remember is that this world needs various types of ‘vessels’. 2 Corinthians 4:7 says: “But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”

Our success is not determined by what kind of vessel we are. Rather, what’s important is how purely we cultivate ourselves and how prepared we are for God to use us.

God requires golden vessels for golden vessel purposes, and clay vessels for clay vessel purposes. Whatever vessel we are, it’s enough if we are faithfully used for the purpose God has set. We should serve God to the best of our abilities in our respective places and be instruments fulfilling His will.

Conclusion

The most important thing in our lives is not leaving behind great achievements. True success is correctly using the talents and gifts God has given us and living according to His will. I hope that we all can live as pure vessels before God and faithfully fulfill our individual callings.
